About us
Leiden is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland. It’s known for its centuries-old architecture and for Leiden University, the country’s oldest, dating from 1575. The university houses the Hortus botanicus Leiden Botanical Garden, founded in 1590, where the tulip was introduced to Western Europe. The Museum de Lakenhal displays works by the Dutch Masters including Rembrandt, who was born in Leiden.

Municipalities play an important role in the Netherlands. A municipality, town hall or city council is known in Dutch as a gemeente, and you will hear this word often in all kinds of administration, from registering at your home address and paying taxes, to registering a marriage.
The gemeente is the third tier of governmental administration in the Netherlands, after the Dutch government and the Dutch provinces. As of January 1, 2023, there are 342 gemeenten or municipalities in the Netherlands.

Basic Registration of Persons (BRP)
The Personal Records Database (BRP) contains personal data of residents of the Netherlands (residents) and of persons who have left the Netherlands (non-residents). Persons who have lived in the Netherlands for less than 4 months can also be registered as non-residents in the BRP. For example, because they temporarily work or study in the Netherlands.
Basic Registry Land Registry (BRK)
The Key Register of Land Registry (BRK) contains information about parcels of land, ownership, mortgages, limited rights (such as ground lease rights, superficies and usufruct) and pipeline networks. In addition, it contains cadastral maps with plot, plot number, surface area, cadastral border and the borders of the national government, the provinces and municipalities.
